Honor Choir Audition Information!

Honor Choir Audition Info

Dear Chamber Singers and Women’s Chorus Families, Your student has the opportunity to audition for the 2024 CCSD Honor Choir. For this event, 200 of the best high school singers from around the valley will gather together to perform a concert of some of the finest choral music that can be found in Las Vegas. It truly is a remarkable experience. Want proof? Listen to a recording of the 2022 Honor Choir performance here.

Every year, CCSD brings in a top-level University Conductor to direct the Honor Choir. This year’s conductor is Andrew Crane, the director of the world-renowned BYU Singers… and my former teacher. This is an especially good year to be a part of the Honor Choir! In 2021, Foothill had 2 students make it into the Honor Choir. In 2022, 7 students made it. In 2023, 11 students made the cut. I am confident this year can be even better.

Auditioning for Honor Choir is optional for all CS and WC students, but I highly encourage anyone interested to audition! Even if you don’t get in, you will grow a lot from going through the audition process. I feel so strongly about encouraging students to audition that FHS Choir will subsidize the $5 audition fee that normally applies, making it free for students to audition. In addition, I will be teaching all of the audition materials in class so that students can be as prepared as possible to have a successful audition.

Students have until Tuesday, 8/27, to decide if they want to audition. They do not need to be prepared to audition on that date— they just need to decide whether or not they will audition. If a student signs up to audition but then changes their mind later, that is ok, but they will be charged a $5 cancellation fee (this is simply to reimburse the Choir Program for what was spent on their audition). Auditions will take place on September 11 and September 13. This will not interfere with Homecoming.

Students and families, please read through the Honor Choir Rehearsal Schedule and Participant Agreement so that you can understand what you are committing to if you audition for and are accepted into the Honor Choir.

Hello again,

I apologize for sending another email so soon! It's come to my attention that I left out some important details about where and when auditions will be held. Thank you to those who asked for more clarification!

Audition Locations, Dates, and Times

Wednesday, September 11

Liberty High School, 3700 Liberty Heights Ave, Henderson, NV 89052

Time: TBD, most likely between 5-8:30pm

Friday, September 13

Basic Academy, 400 Palo Verde Dr, Henderson, NV 89015

Time: TBD, sometime between 2pm and 4:30pm

Why are the times so vague?

Because the Honor Choir encompasses the whole valley, auditions are held over 4 days at 4 different schools around town. Mr. Duff, the choir teacher at Basic HS, is the organizer. He collects from each school the number of students who intend to audition, and then sets up a schedule that accommodates all of them at the nearest available location, to the best of his ability. It's a HUGE juggling act, as you can imagine, with so many different schools and so many different students. That being said, I've found Mr Duff to be very understanding and willing to accommodate students who have a sincere desire to audition. If you have a problem, we can probably solve it together. Let me know.

How can I prepare for the audition on my own outside of class?

What a great idea! Visit this website and scroll down a bit to access part tracks (recordings of your part) that you can use to practice with at home. The website also contains links to examples you can use for sight reading practice.

Thanks,

Mrs. Noorda
